Oscillator Flicker Phase Noise: A Tutorial

چکیده

A deep understanding of how to reduce flicker phase noise (PN) in oscillators is critical supporting ultra-low PN frequency generation for the advanced communications and other emerging high-speed applications. Unfortunately, current literature either full conflicting theories ambiguities or too complex mathematics, hiding physical insights. In this brief, we comprehensively review evolution upconversion clarify their controversial confusing parts. Two classes such mechanisms voltage-biased LC-tank (nMOS-only complementary) are specifically compared numerically verified using a commercial simulation model 28-nm CMOS. We identify that non-resistive terminations both 2nd 3rd harmonic currents contribute oscillation waveform asymmetries lead upconversion. Further, discuss three 1/f 3 reduction mechanisms: shaping, narrowing conduction angle, gate-drain shift.

Near-carrier oscillator spectrum due to flicker and white noise

The effect of device noise on oscillator phase noise in a close vicinity of average oscillator frequency is analyzed. We show that for 1/f noise, the line shape of a free-running oscillator changes from power to approximately Gaussian function very close to the oscillator frequency. The Gaussian regime occurs when the relationship between device noise and oscillator spectrum is strongly nonline...

Multiplicative Noise in Non-equilibrium Phase Transitions: A tutorial

Stochastic phenomena in which the noise amplitude is proportional to the fluctuating variable itself, usually called multiplicative noise, appear ubiquitously in physics, biology, economy and social sciences. The properties of spatially extended systems with this type of stochasticity, paying special attention to the non-equilibrium phase transitions these systems may exhibit, are reviewed here...

Vulnerability to Noise of a Phase-locked Oscillator Array

The eeect of noise on the in-phase attractor of a set of N globally coupled oscillators is studied; these discrete-time maps are associated with the continuous-time equations of motion for a series array of Josephson junction oscillators. We investigate both geometrical properties of the basin of attraction in the large N limit, and the implications of this geometry on the average time for the ...
